US Sikh community shocked by Conn. School shooting
A statement released Friday says the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin is sending its "best intention and energy" to the parents of the children and the victims' families.
In August, a white supremacist killed a half-dozen people at the Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee before killing himself.
Amardeep Kaleka, whose father was among the Sikhs killed, says he can "feel the pain" that the families are going through.
In the statement, Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education, says Sikhs are "heartbroken today."
He appealed to all Sikh places of worship to hold candlelight vigils and to offer prayers for the families this weekend.
Elementary School Shooting: Sikh Community Understands Grief in Newtown, Fox News
OAK CREEK, WI, USA (December 14, 2012)–It’s difficult not to be
affected in some way by the mass shooting that took place in Newtown,
Connecticut on Friday, December 14th. We can all sympathize. In the city
of Oak Creek, they can empathize too.
Kanwardeep Kaleka is the nephew of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin
president who is one of the six that died on a Sunday in early August
2012.
Kaleka tells FOX6 News what he went through then and what many in Newtown may be going through now is terrifying.
“For me personally there, there is a shock. You just don’t believe
it. I thought my uncle was alive that first day,” said Kaleka.
Once the realization of what happened settled in, Kaleka dealt with a myriad of emotions.
“You’re trying to, to grapple with the anger of why do these things
happen and you even question your faith to some degree,” said Kaleka.
Though he still feels the pain of loved ones lost, Kaleka has come to
terms with what happened. Right now, that may seem like an impossible
feat for many of those affected in Newtown, CT. However, Kaleka believes
things will change with the right focus.
“The one big thing I can suggest to that community is working to try
to make this world a better place. I mean after something like this
happens, the only thing you can really feel is what can I do to prevent
other people from being affected by this,” said Kaleka.
While this tragedy may propel the conversation forward Kaleka feels
it shouldn’t only be those affected taking part. Nor should we want for
the next mass shooting to make real change.

US President Obama Cries Over School Shooting
The US president breaks down in tears during an emotional White House address following a deadly shooting in an elementary school.
- Email
"Our hearts are broken today," he said, at times using a finger to wipe tears at the corners of his eyes.
Mr Obama said he had reacted to news of the elementary school shooting first as a parent.
He added that he and First Lady Michelle would do what any other parent in America would do - "hug our children a little tighter".
"There is not a parent in America who does not feel the same overwhelming grief I do," he said.
Mr Obama called for "meaningful action" regardless of politics.
"As a country, we have been through this too many times," he said in the televised address from the White House.
Many of those killed in the rampage were between the ages of five and 10.
US Shooting: Terrified Children Hid In Closet
US Shooting: Terrified Children Hid In Closet
Witnesses of a US school shooting say some children hid in a closet while others cowered under desks.
"I saw policemen - lots of policemen in the hallway with guns. The police took us out of the school," Vanessa Bajraliu, a nine-year-old fourth grader, told the local newspaper Hartford Courant.
"We were told to hold each others' hands and to close our eyes. We opened our eyes when we were outside."
Her 17-year-old brother, Mergim Bajraliu, heard the shots from his nearby home and then the sirens of police cars at the scene.
He rushed to the school, where he said he saw a badly injured girl being carried out, another one with blood on her face.
Some teachers put the students in a closet until police officers told them it was safe to leave the building, US news reports said.
Other children were told by policemen to run away from their classroom and keep going until they reached a firehouse nearby.
"I heard gunshots; I was under a desk with three or four other people," Luie Munguia, an eight-year-old third-grader, was quoted as saying in the reports.
One teacher locked the door and told the students to stand in the corner, said parent Richard Wilford, whose son Richie heard the gunshots and recounted the scene to his father.
Terrified students were crying and holding hands as their teachers escorted them away from the school.
Melissa Makris said her 10-year-old son, Philip, saw what looked like a body under a blanket as he fled the school.
As news of the shooting broke out, parents rushed to the school.
They were in anguish over the fate of their children, some frantically speaking on their mobile phones, others weeping.
"What does a parent think about coming to a school where there's a shooting? It's the most terrifying moment of a parent's life … you have no idea," said Mr Wilford.
Parents whose children emerged from the school unharmed cried and hugged them.
Residents of Newtown, a small quiet town, were in shock, as police and federal officials surrounded the school and sirens rang out in the chilly day.

Sikh soldier becomes first to guard Queen in turban - The Sun
Sikh soldier becomes first to guard Queen in turban
SIKH Jatinderpal Singh Bhullar has become the first soldier to guard the Queen wearing a turban instead of a bearskin hat.
The 25-year-old, who joined the Scots Guards this year, has been given permission to wear the religious headdress outside Buckingham Palace. He was seen standing guard and parading outside the palace for the first time this morning.
The Sun told earlier this month how the former bricklayer, from Birmingham, broke 180 years of tradition.
He is not the first Sikh to take part in guarding Buckingham Palace — but others wore traditional bearskin hats.
At the time, he said: “Conducting public duties in my turban is a great honour.
“I am very proud to be a member of the Household Division, and to be the first Sikh guardsman to mount guard in a turban will be the best thing in my life, especially as a member of the Scots Guards.”
David Cuthill, one retired officer, told a newspaper: “It should be the regiment first and religion second. A Guardsman is not a Guardsman if he’s not wearing a bearskin.
“Hundreds of years of tradition should be protected. I appreciate his predicament but if all the other Guardsmen are in bearskins and he is in a turban, it is going to look ridiculous.”
Guardsman Bhullar’s dad Surinder, 47, from Slough, Berks, said recently: “He deserves respect and he will stay strong. That includes wearing his turban instead of a bearskin, no matter what other soldiers say. He is observing his religion.”

Dal Khalsa deplores human rights situation in Hindutva India
"After 31 years, our men are being harassed. I must ask the Indian civil society why old cases are being opened up against them now”, said Dhami.
I want to question them, has anyone punished those who killed thousands of Sikhs in Delhi in 1984. There are hundreds of Sikhs who got disappeared in Punjab, but government has not booked their killers, he added.
"Ours is a peaceful struggle and pushing people to the wall would be dangerous. I appeal to the intelligentsia and the civil society in India to ponder over the serious situation that is emerging because of the trampling of rights of our men," Dhami added.

1st Sikh Guardsman To Wear A Dastaar While Guarding Buckingham Palace & The Queen
Look, no bearskin! Pictured in his uniform for the first time, the Sikh Guardsman allowed to wear turban at the Palace

Scots Guardsman Bhullar will this week break centuries of tradition when he wears a turban adorned with a regimental cap badge on parade outside the Palace.
Last week, The Mail on Sunday revealed how Guardsman Bhullar had suffered abuse over his Sikh religion and turban from comrades, and now a Facebook tribute page has been set up in his honour.

Our picture of Bhullar in his turban, red tunic and white buff belt was taken at Wellington Barracks in London’s Birdcage Walk, where he is based with colleagues from his regiment’s ceremonial company, known as F Company.
The buttons on Bhullar’s tunic are positioned in threes to represent the Scots Guards’ status as the third regiment in the Guards Division’s order of seniority.
‘The regiment will cease to exist unless it can tap into this resource of potential soldiers in western Scotland and northern England,’ said a source.
‘The Scots Guards must welcome Bhullar and hope his success will encourage other Sikhs and more Muslims to enlist.
‘Bhullar is a hard-working soldier and has won a lot of respect. Nobody pretends this is an easy process for him and there are those who object on traditional grounds to him wearing a turban rather than a bearskin.
‘For them, it is regiment first and religion second and they cannot see beyond that.
‘Bhullar is expected on parade in a black turban adorned with a Scots Guards regimental cap badge early this week. Everyone at Wellington Barracks wishes him all the best.’
Bhullar’s family is delighted. His mother Gurbaxkaur Bhullar, 48, from Slough, Berkshire, said: ‘Jatinderpal called round last Monday to show us some Army photos. My husband Surinderpal was thrilled and said he thought his son looked very striking in his uniform, holding a gun and wearing white gloves.
‘Jatinderpal wanted to join the Army because his grandfather had served in the First World War. We had family pictures of him in his uniform and Jatinderpal would love looking at them.
‘It was a great passion of Jatinderpal’s from a very young age, and he would say when he grew up he wanted to be in the Army and make his country proud of him.
‘We are very proud of him. He kept himself fit with boxing, weightlifting and going to the gym and was always on a strict diet. He is very strong.’
A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: ‘The Army takes great pride in its diversity and it is its long-term aim to be manned by personnel from all of the UK’s diverse communities. There are a number of Sikhs already in the Army who wear turbans when in uniform.’

Sir Patrick Moore, astronomer and broadcaster, dies aged 89

Sir Patrick presented the BBC programme The Sky At Night for over 50 years, making him the longest-running host of the same television show ever.
He wrote dozens of books on astronomy and his research was used by the US and the Russians in their space programmes.
Described by one of his close friends as "fearlessly eccentric", Sir Patrick was notable for his habit of wearing a monocle on screen and his idiosyncratic style.
Sir Patrick presented the first edition of The Sky at Night on 24th April 1957. He last appeared in an episode broadcast on Monday.
A statement by his friends and staff said: "After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home, Farthings, where he today passed on, in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy.
"Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in, a few weeks ago.

'Father figure' Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore was born at Pinner, Middlesex on 4 Mar 1923.
Heart problems meant he spent much of his childhood being educated at home and he became an avid reader. His mother gave him a copy of GF Chambers' book, The Story of the Solar System, and this sparked his lifelong passion for astronomy.
When war came he turned down a place at Cambridge and lied about his age to join the RAF, serving as a navigator with Bomber Command and rising to the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
But the war brought him a personal tragedy after his fiancee, Lorna, was killed when an ambulance she was driving was hit by a bomb. He never married.
Sir Patrick, who had a pacemaker fitted in 2006 and received a knighthood in 2001, won a Bafta for services to television and was a honorary fellow of the Royal Society.
He was a member of the UK Independence party and, briefly, the finance minister for the Monster Raving Loony Party, and attracted some controversy for his outspoken views on Europe and immigration.
BBC science correspondent Pallab Ghosh said Sir Patrick's appearance sometimes aroused as much comment as his astronomy: "He was six-foot-three, and was once described as having 'an air of donnish dishevelment', with his raised eyebrow, scarcely-brushed hair and poorly-fitting suits.
"His enthusiasm was unstoppable, and on occasions he would talk at 300 words a minute."
Queen guitarist Brian May, who published a book on astronomy written with Sir Patrick, described him as a "dear friend, and a kind of father figure to me".
He said: "Patrick will be mourned by the many to whom he was a caring uncle, and by all who loved the delightful wit and clarity of his writings, or enjoyed his fearlessly eccentric persona in public life.
"Patrick is irreplaceable. There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one."
'Charming and hospitable' Television presenter and physicist Professor Brian Cox posted a message on Twitter saying: "Very sad news about Sir Patrick. Helped inspire my love of astronomy. I will miss him!"
And Dr Marek Kakula, public astronomer at Royal Observatory in Greenwich, described him as a "very charming and hospitable man".
"When you came to his home he would always make sure you had enough to eat and drink. He was full of really entertaining and amusing stories.
"There are many many professional astronomers like me who can actually date their interest in astronomy to watching Patrick on TV, so his impact on the world of professional astronomy as well as amateur is hard to overstate."
