Panthic Conference organized by 'Sikh Youth of Panjab' on June 21 at Jalandhar‏

Jalandhar- June 21- Commemorating the 25^th anniversary of the army assault code named “operation Blue Star” against Darbar Sahib in June 1984, the young generation of the community under the banner of ‘Sikh Youth of Punjab’ organized a Panthic Conference to discuss, define and understand what they call “the root cause of the attack and its impact on the minds of today’s youth”.

The conference was chaired by renowned historian Dr Gurdharshan Singh Dhillon, an author of the SGPC sponsored White Paper on June 1984 events.

The president of the SYP Ranbir Singh held up the sacrifices of Sikh martyrs and their “unimaginable hardships” as a lesson for youth of the modern times. “Friends and companions, what we cannot forget- what we must not forget- is that 25 years ago this day it was a time when bravery and selflessness of a few was able to change the course of an entire community”, he said.

“At an hour of maximum danger, amid the bleakest of circumstances, men who thought themselves ordinary found it within themselves to do the extraordinary”.

Joined by organization’s vice-president and general secretary Gurpreet Singh and Parbjot Singh, he honoured the sons of the valiant dead of 1984 attack namely Bhai Kirpal Singh and Bhai Balkar Singh. Both Bhupinder Singh and Ranjit Singh in their speeches expressed ‘pride and honour’ in the role and sacrifices of their fathers.

“I was not born when the attack took place in the eighties,” said Saravkar Singh, who is district president of Ludhiana unit of the SYP. “I’ve heard of “Operation Blue Star” from our fathers and relatives and hail the contribution of those unsung heroes who laid their lives for cause of religion and freedom,

“I wonder how humans could be so cruel and mindless,” said Noblejeet Singh and added governments must respect all their people and their minorities.

“Our participation in the Panthic activities is not instantaneous but instinctive,” said Gurpreet Singh Mann, organization’s vice-president.

SYP general secretary Prabhjot Singh who was 5 years old at the time of the attack says most of the teenagers are anguished over the way the government of India desecrated their religious places. “The holocaust of June 1984 and Nov Delhi pogrom made us to realize that our elder generation had committed a mistake by alienating itself with India,” said Prabhjot. “What’ve I to do with a country in which I’ve lost a complete sense of belonging to?” he said.

Setting the tone for the conference Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh said there are some of the questions that are repeatedly being put to Sikhs at large. Media as also the non-Sikhs in general often ask that now, since a Sikh has become Prime Minister of the country, should not the Sikhs be happy, and pardon the Congress for what it did with them 25 years ago?

Responding to such queries he bluntly reminded the audience that it was hard to overcome decades of mistrust and distrust. The Congress government in power at that time was ruthless in suppressing the rights of Sikhs and others.

Resolution adopted during the convention states “the tremors of 1984 continue to rock the resilient Sikhs, a community whose creation itself was not without birth pangs. In the modern times, the catastrophic events of Operation Bluestar continue to haunt the community. There are lessons for the younger generation to learn from that catastrophe. The religio-political dynamics of the Sikh religion must be understood in proper perspective. That would help in understanding the past, consolidating the roots, shaping the future and preserving the exclusive Sikh identity”.

UK Sikhs Address Concern over Recent Ravidasia Community Protest

In an email sent to different media outlets, the Dal Khalsa organisation based in UK expressed the following concerns regarding the recently held protest by the Ravidasia Community in UK:

1. The rally called for the ban of the Kirpan which is direct attack on the Sikh Faith, with the Kirpan being an article of Faith it is unacceptable and we condemn those who carried banners asking for the ban on the Kirpan and banners such as ' Sant Ramanand killed by Control Freak Sikhs'.
   
2. This randomly held protest, exactly a week after Sikhs marked the 25th Anniversary of the Sikh Genocide in Central London in a rally attended by tens of thousands of Sikhs from across Britain, was deliberately staged in order to defame Sikhs who at the same place a week earlier had shown to the World the Terrorism India had carried out on its minorities.
   
3. This rally was held to defame the Sikhs in the public eye and show them as terrorists, secondly it was held to ignite violence between Sikhs and those of the Ravidassia community in the UK. Although we do not hold members of the Ravidassia community for being anti Sikh we wish to state that within the structure of the community they have been infiltrated by Indian agencies who direct leaders and instruct them on what to say and do.
   
4. The agents responsible for the protest have links with the Hindu Forum UK , Hindu Council, and the HSS the UK branch of the RSS. We believe these groups the Hindu Forum UK, Hindu Council and HSS amongst other groups and shady figures of the Indian Agencies got this protest arranged with one aim - to destroy the Sikh image, to disrupt and take attention away from the 25th anniversary of 1984, and to cause internal divisions within the Sikh Community through the issue of the Caste System.
   
5. The protest was allowed to take place in parts of Hyde Park where normally one cannot protest, along with protestors being allowed to protest right across the pavement outside India House in London. Where as the Sikh protests which are held in August are only given a small section amongst a heavy Police presence, this clearly shows that India House (Agencies) had a hand in the protest as if it was any other protest complaints would have been made to the Police.

In addition, the Panthic Weekly would like to assert the following points:

1. While the protest called for a ban on the kirpan, it should be noted that most Granthi sevadars at Ravidasia Gurdwaras have to be amritthari. If the UK based pro-Hindutva group which organized this protest seeks a ban on the kirpan, would it also require the Granthi sevadars employed by Ravidas Sabha across the world to also shun their kirpans?
2. By far, the Ravidas community associates itself with the Sikh religion. The protest in UK was the first example where the members of this community shun Sikhi as their religion. This is contrary from any other incident in the past.
3. It should be noted that even outside India, the Ravidasia community celebrates its events along with the Sikh brotherhood. Their floats can be seen eminently at various nagar kirtans organized throughout the world.
4. The Hindutva group become successful in removing parkash of Guru Granth Sahib from the program held to mark the funeral of Ramanand. However in past, Ravidasia Sikhs observe all their events at Gurdwaras with parkash of Guru Granth Sahib. Prior to the recent propaganda, such feelings of hatred were never expressed by the Ravidasia community.
5. Although the ardas of the Ravidas community has been modified, majority of it is the same as the ardas read at any other Gurdwara Sahib.

If in past, the Ravidas Community has shared so many similarities with the mainstream Sikh religion, what gives a small group of infiltrators based in UK to divide the followers of Bhagat Ravidas Ji from the mainstream Sikhs?

Dal Khalsa would like to applaud the UK Tamil Nation for the gigantic rally which took place in London on Saturday 20th June 2009.The rally was attended by 100,000 people from across the UK Tamil Community,Human Rights Groups,Solidarity Groups,MP's and others.

Tamils march to save ‘imprisoned’ brethren in Sri Lanka [BTF 2009.06.20]

The march, organised by the British Tamils Forum (BTF), began at Park Lane at 2pm, proceeded through the busy areas of Piccadilly, Whitehall and Parliament Square before following the river Thames to Blackfriars. Groups from non-Tamil communities including the Sikh Community participated in the procession showing solidarity with the Tamil cause. The Tamil community also supported the Sikhs at the Sikh rally for freedom on June 7th 2009 which took place in Hyde park London and stood shoulder to shoulder with the Sikh Community against the 1984 Genocide of Sikhs by the Indian Government. A Memorandum calling for immediate registration of all detainees, unfettered access to international aid agencies to the camps, immediate release of these civilians and facilitation of the prosecution of Mahinda Rajapakse (President of Sri Lanka), Gotabaya Rajapakse (Defence Secretary) and Lt. Gen Sarath Fonseka (Chief of Sri Lankan Army) for War Crimes against Tamils was handed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Demonstrators heard rousing speeches from politicians, including Tony Benn, Simon Hughes MP and Jeremy Corbyn MP, social activists and members of different sections of the Tamil community. Notably, the crowds were also addressed by Tim Martin, the former aid worker and director of the charity Act Now, who fasted for 21 days in Parliament Square to highlight the plight of the Tamils and Ms Jan Jananayagam, an independent candidate from the Tamil community at the recent European election, who received an unprecedented, over 50,000 votes, with the support of the Sikh community. Dal Singh Dhesy, Director of the Sikh Community & Youth Service who was instrumental in ensuring that Jan Jananayagam received the backing and votes of the Sikh community said “We are proud to have supported the European Parliamentary campaign and bring solidarity between the Tamil and Sikh communities and look forward to support the Tamil community”.

A MILESTONE AND A TIME TO ADDRESS GENOCIDE

This week marks the 25^th anniversary of the infamous Indian army attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar as well a 37 major Sikh shrines in Punjab. Thousands of innocent Sikhs were brutally killed while the Red Cross, human rights bodies and the media were banned from the region. The holy Akal Takht Sahib – the seat of Sikh temporal power – was reduced to rubble by tanks and artillery and the Sikh Reference Library containing thousands of artifacts and original manuscripts of the scriptures was deliberately looted and then burned down.

Those horrific events were followed by the genocide of the November 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms in Delhi and other Indian cities, after Indira Gandhi was assassinated, in which organised gangs butchered over 20,000 Sikhs whilst the police looked on. The ensuing years saw systematic abuse of human rights with the enactment of ‘black laws’, extra-judicial killings, disappearances and secret cremations, and the routine use of torture on a massive scale. In all, some 200,000 Sikhs were killed in the conflict from 1984 to 1995.

A quarter of a century later none of the guilty have been been brought before any domestic or international court. The reality is that the perpetrators have been given legal immunity by Indian authorities, with many of them continuing to hold high political office. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and others have condemned this impunity and it now falls to the international community to act.

After 25 years of deliberate inaction from India’s political and judicial establishment, Sikhs are calling for an international court to take up the challenge, similar to the UN established courts dealing with genocide in the former Yugoslavia and Darfur.

At the same time we honour the memory of those who have lost their lives under the brutal state terrorism of the Indian state. In their cherished name we pledge to secure justice and redress.

FREEDOM: INDEPENDENCE AND DIGNITY OF THE SIKH NATION

The Sikh Nation, a proud and distinctive people which made huge sacrifices in both World Wars for the freedoms and dignity of others is today living under occupation a hegemonic Indian state since the departure of the British in 1947. Having been denied its own freedom and suffered massive losses in the Partition process, the Sikhs were then denied recognition as a nation and even declared to be “Hindus “for the purposes of India’s constitution.

Systematically they were denied civil and political rights in their own homeland in Indian-controlled Punjab. The precious natural resources of the Punjab have been appropriated by an increasingly centralised unitary state which continues to be governed by ruling elite which has also denied the region crucial investment, leaving its economy in ruins. 75% of Punjab’s river waters have been taken by other Indian states for decades, in contravention of riparian law and without compensation, leaving experts to predict it will become a desert by 2010.

The Sikhs have, as a freedom loving people, tried to secure recognition and autonomy within India since 1947 but their numerous peaceful agitations were rejected out of hand; instead India resorted to state terrorism on a massive scale to suppress the legitimate demands of a defenceless people comprising just 2% of the population. In 1984 the level of state violence reached genocidal proportions, starting with the with the attack on the Golden Temple in June 1984 in a full scale deployment of the military to crush the Sikhs.

In 1986 the Sarbat Khalsa (national gathering of the Sikhs) resolved, in an historic decision responding to Indian aggression, to sever ties with India and establish a sovereign independent state of Khalistan to secure its territory, people and destiny. That peaceable and democratic exercise was met with further aggression as India refused to even recognise the need for a political settlement of any kind. Today that intransigence means no resolution of the conflict has been allowed to emerge.

The Sikhs of Punjab are committed to resolve the conflict in a manner which respects their right of self-determination, in accordance with international law. Their political leaders are however even now still being criminalised (19 were charged with sedition last month) simply for peacefully and democratically voicing that commitment.

“All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.”

- Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

The march and rally in London on Sunday 7^th June 2009 is intended to highlight the cause of Sikh independence which along with the resolution of India’s other conflicts, such as in Kashmir, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Bodoland and elsewhere will bring justice and the rule of law to what has become the graveyard of freedom and theatre of state terror in South Asia.
