This is the £1m vision for a dedicated memorial in Derby to millions of Sikhs killed in six holocausts and two World Wars.

Planning permission is being sought to build the National Sikh Holocaust and Shaheedi Memorial in Pear Tree.

The granite and sandstone structure would measure more than seven metres high and would be sited near to the National Sikh Heritage Centre on Prince's Street.

It's hoped the project will be entirely funded through donations from the worldwide Sikh community.

The idea is to honour more than 83,000 Sikhs killed in the First and Second World Wars along with millions who died in holocausts in India and Pakistan between 1658 and 1995.

If granted permission, work is due to start on the memorial in spring and should be finished before the end of 2011.
